Snow continued throughout the day not easing until after dark leaving a settling of 125mm and deeper in places where it had drifted.

The Eurostar and Eurotunnel trains stopped running and caused major problems for people trying to travel for their Christmas holidays.

With temperatures only just creeping above freezing during the day and then a very harsh frost of -5.6 the heavy snow froze leaving the roads very hazordous. Temperatures the following day did not rise above freezing and with the councils starting to run out of rock salt for the roads, the minor roads were very dangerous.

Only a handful of schools opened again but the vast majority remained shut since Wednesday, mostly down to the approach roads being too dangerous to travel on. The snowfall caused major power disruption in the area with electricity lines being bought down. Weather warning again issued for the south east of England because of the forecast freezing temperatures. Coldest spot was Altnaharra (Northwest highlands) with -22.3C. Aberdeen saw -13.7C and Glasgow -9.7C. Light snow fell for the majority of the day adding although it is fine snow and did not add too much to the already high volumes of snow. Police in Surrey have urged motorists not to use the roads unless it is an emergency, following further snowfall. East Surrey Hospital has issued an appeal for people with 4x4 vehicles to help get staff to and from work. Southern Railways said all its services south of East Croydon had been suspended because of the wintry weather. At least 225 schools in the county have been closed because of the wintry conditions. 2012-02-04 YesYes55 Well, the forecasters were spot on. It was stated that snow would arrive in Reigate between 1800 and 1900 hours and at 1813 hours the first flakes appeared in the air! It then continued to snow well past midnight. The snow was fine and small flakes but was constant for 6+ hours. By 2330 hours there was 55mm of snow in the garden.

No-one is thought to have been hurt but a 25-mile (40km) long section of the A1 northbound in North Yorkshire was shut on Monday morning. A police spokesman said there were a number of collisions involving jack-knifed lorries and other vehicles. Schools have also been affected with about 55 closed in Essex. A total of 39 were closed in East Sussex with a further 19 closed in Kent and Medway. A handful of schools were also closed in the East Midlands, Warwickshire, Surrey and Yorkshire. Severe weather warnings are in place across England with ice posing a major hazard on roads and pavements. Some rail services continued to suffer following the weekends big freeze.
