The falling value of the pound

The value of the pound has fallen to a new record low this week - typically as I need to transfer some money out to France before Christmas. I remember when I bought La Pagerie back in 2003 the value of the poound was around €1.50 / £1.00 which was great. Just after I agreed the price the value started to fall slightly which meant I ended up paying slightly more than I had planned, but it was worth it in the end! However, the value this week fell to around €1.16 / £1.50.

I have read that some experts reckon it will soon be €1.00 / £1.00 which would make life easier for working out the value but will come as a shock to many property owners and tourists. Personally I hope that the strength of the pound improves - and quickly!

Speed Ferries

Over the years of travelling to France I have been looking at the quickest and cheapest way to cross the channel. One of the newest players was a company called Speed Ferries who had one vessel which travelled from Dover to Boulogne for a very good price. The kids loved the crossing as we could get seats in front of the TV and they could watch cartoons for all of the 40 minute crossing.

Unfortunately they had their only vessel seized by authorities in Boulogne a few weeks back because of unpaid taxes and fees. Very soon afterwards the company went into administration and is currently being sold as a going concern.

I really do hope they manage to find a buyer for this service although I do fear the worst.
